The Indian Hotel & Tourism Industry, an integral part of India’s growth story is an important source of foreign exchange and a major employment generator. In the recent years, the sector has shown prominent growth due to an expanding Indian middle class, a growing airline sector, increase in foreign tourists and government led initiatives.

The second-largest sub-segment of the services sector comprising trade, hotel and restaurants and repair services contributed nearly US$295.7bn or 19.2% to the GDP in FY16, while growing at 8.9% y-o-y.

When it comes to the tourism sector, the Indian government has been committed for its augmentation.  For its infrastructural development and promotion in the 2016-17 Union Budget, Rs15.9 billion was allocated, a 70% hike over the previous year. The “Clean India” campaign and development of inland waterways for transport and tourism are projects that have gained momentum. Programmes such as “Make in India” and the “Smart Cities” initiative proves the  Government’s support to skill development and investments in Hotel and Tourism.
