The Indian Textile Industry is one of the leading textile industries in the world. As one of the key sectors of India’s manufacturing segment, it contributes about 14% to industrial production, 5% to GDP and 17% to country’s export earnings. By 2021, the domestic textile and apparel industry in India is estimated to reach US$223bn from US$108bn in 2015.
Further promoting the industry is the new textile policy announced recently by the Govt. of India. It is slated to generate over 10 million jobs in the textile and apparel industry, attract investments of about Rs740bn and increase exports by US$30bn over the next three years. With support from the textile policy, India’s apparel export is expected to increase from about US$17bn to US$40bn over the next three years.
